In March 2012, shortly before his death, HIH Prince Tomohito of Mikasa entrusted Fujiko Hara with a letter, which set out his hopes to develop greater friendship between Japan and the United Kingdom through personal and educational exchanges.

Prince Tomohito was the first member of the Japanese Imperial Family to study in the United Kingdom following the Second World War. Promoting bilateral friendship through personal exchanges in various areas, and the development of young people’s capabilities, was one of the main wishes of His Imperial Highness’s later years.

People in both Japan and the United Kingdom such as Mrs Hara, Mr Kazuhiro Tobisawa, and Mr Peter Thompson, who became Chairman of the Board of Trustees of this Foundation, started to discuss how to turn Prince Tomohito's wish into reality. That was the origin of the establishment of this Foundation.
